In a 1990 report, the non-partisan U.S. General Accounting Office found “a pattern of evidence indicating racial disparities in the charging, sentencing, and imposition of the death penalty.” The study concluded that a defendant was several times more likely to be sentenced to death if the murder victim was white. This has been confirmed by the findings of many other studies that, holding all other factors constant, the single most reliable predictor of whether someone will be sentenced to death is the race of the victim.

1. A report sponsored by the American Bar Association in 2007 concluded that one-third of African-American death row inmates in Philadelphia would have received sentences of life imprisonment if they had not been African-American.
2. A January 2003 study released by the University of Maryland concluded that race and geography are major factors in death penalty decisions. Specifically, prosecutors are more likely to seek a death sentence when the race of the victim is white and are less likely to seek a death sentence when the victim is African-American.
3. A 2007 study of death sentences in Connecticut conducted by Yale University School of Law revealed that African-American defendants receive the death penalty at three times the rate of white defendants in cases where the victims are white. In addition, killers of white victims are treated more severely than people who kill minorities, when it comes to deciding what charges to bring.

When my ex filed the phony abuse reports against me (long story short, this was his idea of a way to get custody & stop paying child support), they came to my then 3 year old son’s preschool intent on taking him into custody immediately. Fortunately the report detailed serious bruises which didn’t exist at all. Plus the school’s assistant director had some experience with DCFS & she insisted that they interview kiddo in the building or go get a warrant. They interviewed him, quickly figured out he’d been coached (badly, since he could only remember part of the story), and after a visit to my home & checking with his pediatrician they closed the case. I got through it, but it was clear to me throughout that it was my ex’s stupidity that kept my kid from being taken by the system. If it hadn’t been such a blatant misuse of the system I don’t know that they wouldn’t have taken kiddo from me. I was black, single, living in the projects (see the aforementioned child support which wasn’t getting paid & still isn’t), and getting over cancer. The social worker even made comments about how amazed she was at the cleanliness of my house & the amount of healthy food in my fridge. They expect us to be bad parents so any deviation from the white suburban “norm” can have dire consequences for parents of color or lower economic means.

this is/was the way it is for Native Americans as well. prior to 1978 (i.e. the passing of the Indian Child Welfare Act) 25% of native kids were being put in foster homes and/or adopted out. That act was made to protect the children however CPS and other adoption agencies around the country found ways to get around it or just straight up disregarded it. When they did a study to see if it the act was working 10 years later in 1988, they had found that now the numbers had jumped up to 35%

Hmm, so the real issue here is what? Oh right. Tiana’s black. Of course.

….and right after he comments on thinking she was a princess because of her dress, she straight up tells him she’s a waitress & was dressed as she was because of the costume party.

On January 12, 2010, one day after his 18th birthday, CAPA High School honors student Jordan Trent Miles was ambushed by three plain clothes Pittsburgh police officers, who failed to identify themselves and approached him aggressively. The officers did not say “Stop! Police!”, they jumped out of an unmarked vehicle, one of them yelling “Where’s your money? Where’s the drugs? Where’s the gun?” Miles, never before in trouble with the police and thinking he was being robbed, began to run, and slipped on the icy sidewalk. The officers overtook Miles and administered a brutal beating that left him unrecognizable, ripping dreadlocks out of his head, and continuing to beat him as he lay on the ground after their initial assault, stammering the Lord’s Prayer. There can be no explaining away or excusing what was done to Miles.

The police officers lied about what happened, claiming there was a bulge in his pocket they assumed was a gun but “turned out to be a Mountain Dew bottle”. No bottle was ever entered into evidence, and Jordan and his friends will tell you he doesn’t even drink the soda. The officers also attempted to claim a neighbor reported him as a prowler and attempted to bring assault charges against Miles, which were tossed out of court when the neighbor said she did no such thing. Despite all this, the City of Pittsburgh went on to reward these violent officers with a commendation and, during their suspension, paid them more than they earned while working. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh DA has not brought charges and the Justice Department announced on May 4th, 2011 that it would not prosecute the three officers. The mayor and police chief announced on May 5th that the three officers would be returning to work.

“I feel that my son was racially profiled,” Terez Miles said. “It’s a rough neighborhood; it was after dark. … They assumed he was up to no good because he’s black. My son, he knows nothing about the streets at all. He’s had a very sheltered life, he’s very quiet, he doesn’t know police officers sit in cars and stalk people like that.”

This is actually a great example for white folks who want to get pissy when POC say things like “I hate white people!” It’s because shit like this happens. It’s because we can be going about our business just all “tra-la-la!” & stuff & some asshole like TimeIsRough steps in & reminds us that a chunk of the population thinks it’s okay to enact psychological warfare on us just whenever the fuck they damned well please. No indicators, no warnings, no nothing. They’re our neighbors, our co-workers, people we see on the bus, people at the grocery store, and it happens often enough & randomly enough (see above) that we really do have no choice but to be wary of every. single. white person. until they prove where they stand with this shit. So no, no qualifiers, no “breaking it to you gently”, cuz we don’t get that so we really can’t be expected to give it.

^^^Exactly. I have been backed into corners in different work places, restaurants, at school…where I have to defend myself by telling people it is NOT okay to some say some things. I’m being completely serious right now. I’m a very friendly person…so I guess I give off the impression that it’s okay to say certain things around me. Maybe I’m just “proper” or “white” enough for people to get real comfortable and say certain things. So when I stand up and say something, people are shocked because they thought “we were cool”. The sad thing is, I thought we were as well. You guys wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve heard people I thought were my friends say the word, “nigger”, and really mean it. Honestly, people have NO idea what that does to you. To think, this person probably uses that word in their free time…probably as a joke…probably to tell stories to their friends (these are all examples I’ve witnessed for myself).  “No indicators, no warnings, no nothing. They’re our neighbors, our co-workers, people we see on the bus, people at the grocery store…” I’ve heard so many times…”It’s just a word.” Yeah, to you, it is, but to me…it’s years of degradation, humiliation, and ignorance. Also, “but black people say it…” I wish we didn’t, but listen, it’s not for you. You’re just going to have to deal with the fact that you can’t say it and get over it. Why do you want to say it anyway? Do you think it makes you look cool? WRONG.

I just got into it with some racist piece of shit at a restaurant! I’m fucking furious!

I’m at this restaurant with my friend and this White girl and her boyfriend are sitting at the table behind us being super loud and obnoxious. Every time the waiter, a Middle Eastern guy walks by their table, this girl starts making hugely offensive comments about how her bf should keep an eye out for bombs and how he may have put anthrax in their food and they both keep laughing like she’s a fucking comedian. Not only is she saying this horrible stuff, but she’s soooo loud. So I turn around and yell “Will you shut up?! The rest of us are trying to eat in peace here, without having to hear your obnoxious racist comments!” She looks stunned and quietly eats her food. My friend and I go back to our conversation thinking its settled. Nope.

She waits until she leaves and is at the door before saying anything and you know what she says? ” Oooooh, I got told off by a Black girl and a terrorist, oooooh hahahaha” ( the ‘terrorist’ being my friend, who is wearing a hijab)

We jumped up from our table, my friend says “Why don’t you say that again, this time to our faces, you racist bitch!” Her boyfriend tries to step in, I tell him “Stay the fuck out of this! If she wants to start shit, she better be able to finish it!”

At this point she’s obviously terrified and thinks we’re going to kick her ass. She starts looking at the people in the restaurant to help her out. No luck. She literally runs out crying.

I kid you not, the entire restaurant starts laughing and clapping as we sit back down. The waiter who they were talking shit about comes by and tells us that they’re always in here being disgusting and this is the first time anybody has ever said anything to them.

Uggghhh.
